Sungjin Im, PhD
Director of Translational Neuroscience Laboratory
Assistant Professor of Psychology at Western Kentucky University
Dr. Sungjin Im is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Director of the Translational Neuroscience Laboratory (TNL) at Western Kentucky University. Dr. Im graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona and Korea University with a B.A. in psychology and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno. After completing his predoctoral internship at Stony Brook University, where he worked with individuals with severe mental illness and psychiatric emergencies, Dr. Im worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Center of Alcohol and Substance Use Studies at Rutgers Unversity and studied comorbid trauma and substance use disorders by using cutting-edge technology.
Dr. Im's research focuses on bridging the gap between cognitive neuroscience and clinical science by applying a wide range of methodological approaches including fMRI, EEG, ECG, EDA, EMG, impedance cardiograph, and behavioral tasks. Dr. Im seeks further understanding of neurophysiological mechanisms that underlie trauma and substance use and the development of a mindfulness-based intervention to treat these conditions. As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Im received extensive training in mindfulness-based approaches including acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and published a book chapter and papers on related topics.
